Dog Names by Tag
Every dog name collection on iDogNames is labeled with one or more tags — short keywords describing the theme, breed, origin, color, size, or personality the collection is about. The page you are on now gathers the 200 most popular tags in one scrollable grid, giving you a bird's-eye view of the whole site.
Think of tags as discovery shortcuts. Instead of navigating through Categories, Breeds, Origins, Colors, and Sizes one branch at a time, you can scan this page for a single word that captures the vibe you want — Warrior, Japanese, Brindle, Small Girl, Mystical, Cowboy, Composer — and jump straight into a curated list. The number next to each tag shows how many dog names are in that collection, so you can gauge the depth of each theme at a glance.
Tags cover an enormous range: popular dog breeds (Labrador, German Shepherd, Husky), cultural and linguistic origins (Irish, Japanese, Hawaiian, Swahili), colors and coat patterns (Black, Brindle, Golden), sizes (Tiny, Big, Giant), personalities (Strong, Clever, Mystical, Funny), and fun concept themes drawn from mythology, music, food, sport, and pop culture. If a theme has at least a dozen matching names, there is probably a tag for it.

How Tags Are Different from Categories
iDogNames organizes names in two complementary ways. Categories are the structured top-level branches of the site — Breeds, Origins, Colors, Sizes, and thematic Categories (cool, cute, funny, etc.) — each with its own landing page and sub-lists. Tags are flatter and more specific: they sit on individual name collections and describe exactly what a collection is about. Every tag links back into the category system, so tag-browsing and category-browsing ultimately lead to the same curated pages; tags just give you a faster horizontal view of what is available.
Tips for Using Tags
- Scan the big tags first. Tags with high name counts (shown in the badge) usually represent the most-loved themes and are a safe starting point if you have no specific direction yet.
- Combine tags in your head. If you want a "strong Japanese name," click the Japanese tag first, then narrow visually within that page.
- Try unusual tags for inspiration. Tags like Composer, Athlete, Western, or Mystical surface name pools you might not think to search for directly — great for reluctant brainstormers.
- Still stuck? Use the Dog Name Generator for random suggestions filtered by gender and origin, or browse naming tips for thematic inspiration articles.
