The Rajapalayam, also called the Polygar Hound or Indian Ghost Hound, is a striking white sighthound from the town of Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, in South India. It was raised under the Nayak dynasty in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to hunt wild boar and to guard home and estate, and it served as a war dog in the Carnatic Wars and the Polygar Wars. In 2005 it was the highest-valued of India Post's four indigenous-dog stamps, a mark of its standing as a Tamil cultural treasure.
Its short, smooth coat is predominantly a milky white, often paired with a pink nose and pale, pinkish skin -- the look that earned it the name Ghost Hound. It is more muscular and heavier-boned than most sighthounds, yet keeps the deep chest and clean lines built for speed, and it can hunt by sight and track by scent alike. With hunting in decline its numbers fell to roughly two hundred dogs by the 1980s, before a Kennel Club of India revival brought it back from the edge.
The Rajapalayam is fiercely loyal, brave and protective, devoted to its family yet standoffish with strangers and other animals -- a born guardian with a strong prey drive. Names can honour its ghostly white coat, its warrior past, or its Tamil roots. A white dog wears Snow, Ivory, Pearl, Casper, Coconut, and Cotton; the Ghost Hound suits Ghost, Spirit, Phantom, and Mystic; the swift hunter suits Dash, Flash, Bolt, Arrow, and Streak; and Raja, Veer, Arjun, and Maya nod to its South Indian heritage.
