Our Philosophy
A dog's name is something you'll say an estimated 30,000 times over their lifetime. It shapes how you train them, how you introduce them to friends, and how you think about them day-to-day. Picking the right one shouldn't feel like a chore — it should be fun and thoughtful.
We keep the site ad-supported and free to use. We don't require accounts. We don't sell your data. We just want to be the best place on the internet to find a dog name you'll still love in ten years.
Our Apps
We also publish two iOS apps:
- Dog Names Expert — browse and save names offline, right on your phone.
- FurCare Suite — a pet care companion for tracking health, nutrition, reminders, and more.

A Bit of History
iDogNames has been online since 2013. The site started as a hobby project focused on unusual and culturally rich names, and has grown into one of the most comprehensive dog-naming resources on the web. We're a small, independent operation — not a corporate publisher.
Meet the Editor
Marvin Tang is the founder and editor of iDogNames. He started the site in 2013 after spending too many evenings on naming-advice forums that kept recycling the same thirty names, and he's been curating it since.
Marvin writes and edits naming guides, maintains the name database, and reviews community submissions. The catalog includes legacy records added over many years, so verification is ongoing rather than complete. Where a meaning or origin has not been verified, the site now labels it as such. Breed and etymology claims are reviewed against identifiable sources during editorial updates. You can reach him at [email protected].
Editorial and Data Policy
Theme collections distinguish direct references from broader inspiration. A color, mood, or story-adjacent word should not be presented as a character name, and a themed name is not evidence of a dog's temperament. We do not publish unsupported popularity rankings or invent a meaning to complete a record.
Older catalog entries may have incomplete fields. Those gaps are shown as unverified while we work through the source record. Corrections are applied to the underlying record so the same claim is not repeated across category, search, and detail pages.
Feedback, Corrections, Suggestions
We rely on readers to catch errors and suggest new collections. If you spot a wrong meaning, a missing breed, or a name that should be in a category, please tell us — we read every message.
