The Rampur Greyhound, or Rampur Hound, is a tall and regal sighthound from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, North India. It was developed in the eighteenth century by Ahmad Ali Khan, the Nawab of Rampur, who crossed the Afghan Hound with the English Greyhound -- taking speed and obedience from the Greyhound and strength, courage and climate-hardiness from the Afghan, with Tazi and native pariah blood in the mix. The Nawabs prized it as a hunting hound, and in 2005 it was honoured on one of India Post's four indigenous-breed stamps.
This is a large, short-haired, powerfully built dog -- visibly broader and more heavily muscled than the English Greyhound, with a broad skull and famously flexible, almost feline feet that give it balance over rough ground. Males stand roughly sixty to seventy-five centimetres and can reach close to forty miles per hour. The coat is seen in mouse-grey, black, brindle, fawn and white. It was bred to course jackal and wild boar and to face leopards and panthers; a single hound taking down a golden jackal was once a test of its courage.
The Rampur is a reserved, devoted one-person dog -- calm and even sleepy by day, alert and watchful by night. Names can honour its royal Nawabi past, its grey or dark coat, or its blazing speed. Regal picks suit it best -- Raja, Rani, Prince, Duke, Baron, Caesar, and Noble; a grey or silver coat wears Slate, Storm, Silver, Pewter, and Smoky; a black or brindle one suits Onyx, Jet, Shadow, Tiger, and Sable; and the sprinter is well served by Dash, Bolt, Arrow, Comet, and Lightning.
