The Chippiparai is an elegant sighthound from Tamil Nadu, in South India, found most often around Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thenkasi, Thoothukudi and Madurai. Thought to descend from Saluki stock, it takes its name from the village of Sippipparai in the Vembakottai taluk. For centuries it was bred and kept by the royal families of Tirunelveli and Madurai and by the affluent class, and to this day it remains an emblem of royalty and dignity -- a hound of kings rather than of the common yard. It is a close cousin of the bicoloured Kanni and the white Rajapalayam.
Built on classic gazehound lines -- long-legged, lean and lithe, and standing around sixty-one centimetres at the shoulder -- the Chippiparai is made for speed across open ground. Where the Kanni is black-and-tan and the Rajapalayam milky white, the Chippiparai is the solid-coloured one of the Tamil trio, seen most often in silver-grey, fawn and reddish-brown, though white and other shades do occur. The short, smooth coat takes almost no grooming and sits close over hard, racing muscle.
The Chippiparai is famously a one-master dog, often shunning food or fuss from anyone but its own handler, and it is widely regarded as the most intelligent and biddable of India's native breeds. Names can honour its royal past, its silver or fawn coat, its great speed, or its Tamil roots. Regal picks suit it best -- Raja, Rani, Prince, Duke, Noble, and Caesar; a silver-grey coat wears Slate, Silver, Smoky, Pewter, and Storm; a fawn or red one suits Sandy, Honey, Rusty, Tawny, and Copper; the sprinter suits Dash, Bolt, Arrow, and Comet; and Veer, Arjun, and Shiva nod to its homeland.
