The Eurasier is a spitz-type companion breed created in Germany in 1960 by Julius Wipfel, Charlotte Baldamus, and a small circle of enthusiasts who set out to combine the best qualities of the Chow Chow and the Wolfspitz (the breed known elsewhere as the Keeshond). The first cross was called the Wolf-Chow; twelve years later, after a Samoyed was added to the line, the breed was renamed Eurasier -- "Eurasian" -- and the Federation Cynologique Internationale recognised it in 1973. One of its most famous admirers was the Nobel-laureate behaviourist Konrad Lorenz, who kept a Eurasier named Babett, given to him by Charlotte Baldamus.
Everything about the Eurasier points to companionship rather than work. It is a calm, even-tempered, dignified dog -- watchful and alert yet reserved with strangers without being timid or aggressive, and deeply bonded to its own family. It is quiet and undemanding indoors and lively and playful outside, and it carries the thick double coat, curled tail, and gentle expression of its spitz ancestry. This is a dog bred specifically to be a family member, and it does not thrive when left apart from its people.
Names for a Eurasier can honour its German roots, its spitz heritage, or its serene character. German picks like Heidi, Greta, Bruno, Klaus, Fritz, Otto, Ingrid, and Wolfgang suit the country of origin, and Julius nods to founder Julius Wipfel. The wolf-and-snow spitz lineage invites Wolf, Bear, Teddy, Cloud, Misty, Smokey, Nanook, Frost, and Bjorn for the plush coat, while Bao, Mei, Suki, Yuki, and Zen tip a hat to the Chow Chow and Samoyed in the breed's ancestry. For the breed's calm, watchful nature, gentle names like Sage, Luna, and Loki feel right at home.
