The American Hairless Terrier is the only hairless breed developed in the United States. It traces to a single hairless puppy born in a litter of Rat Terriers in Louisiana in 1972; her owners bred a line from her, and the breed was developed from that Rat Terrier foundation. The American Kennel Club granted it full recognition in 2016 as a member of the Terrier group. A coated variety exists alongside the hairless one.
It is a small, smooth, muscular terrier -- the hairless variety born with a soft downy coat that is shed for warm, bare skin ranging from pink to dark with spots, skin that needs sun protection in summer and a sweater in winter. In character it is all terrier: alert, energetic, curious, playful and devoted, carrying the spark and grit of its Rat Terrier ancestry with an affectionate, people-focused streak. Its low-shedding hairless coat makes it a frequent choice for allergy-conscious households.
American names suit the breed's homeland and its Louisiana origin most directly -- Tex, Dixie, Bayou and Scout sit naturally on this all-American terrier, and the foundation dog's own name, Josephine, is a fitting nod to where the line began. Spunky, bright picks such as Buzz, Nipper, Gizmo and Pixie match its quick terrier energy, while warm, affectionate names like Sunny, Cocoa, Peanut and Sprout suit its bare-skinned, snuggle-seeking nature.
