The Bali Dog, refined in its pedigree form as the Kintamani, is the native dog of Bali, in Indonesia. It takes its name from the cool Kintamani highlands near the volcano Mount Batur, where it was developed from the free-roaming Balinese street dogs whose ancestors are thought to have reached the island some three thousand years ago. In 2019 the Kintamani became the very first Indonesian breed to win international recognition from the FCI -- a proud milestone for the dog that has wandered the island's villages and temples for millennia.
This is a handsome spitz: a thick double coat, a bushy tail curved up over the back, semi-erect ears, almond-shaped brown eyes, and black skin pigment. The most prized and most familiar colour is a bright, clean white, but the standard also accepts fawn or beige, red, brindle, and black. Some hold that the breed owes its plush coat and curled tail in part to Chow Chow stock brought to the island long ago by Chinese traders, which would make it a distant cousin of the Asian spitz family.
The Kintamani is watchful, intelligent and easy to train, but also fiercely independent and territorial -- a natural guardian that can be boldly protective of its patch and yet tender and devoted with its own family. Names can play up its snowy coat, its spitz charm, its island home, or its proud guardian heart. A white dog suits Snow, Snowy, Ivory, Pearl, Cloud, Coconut, Casper, and Marshmallow; its fluffy spitz looks suit Bear, Teddy, Simba, and Fluffy; a fawn or red one wears Rusty, Copper, Honey, Sandy, and Fawn; a brindle wears Tiger and Sable; and Bali, Zen, Lotus, Saffron, Mango, and Angel give it an island flavour.
