The Vikhan is an ancient and now rare livestock-guardian dog of the high Chitral region of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with relatives across the border in the Indian Himalayas. For generations it has worked the rugged Himalayan foothills, guarding flocks of sheep and goats against snow leopards, wolves and bears. Its numbers have fallen dangerously low in modern times, and breeders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have begun working to save and promote it.
Unlike the heavy, bulky mastiff-type guardians, the Vikhan is lighter in frame and built more for speed and agility than sheer strength -- it is often likened to a large Scotch Collie. Males stand roughly sixty-six to sixty-eight centimetres and weigh around forty-five kilograms. It carries a long, dense double coat, sometimes shorn for its wool, with drooped ears and a bushy tail. Coats come in black, reddish, brown and fawn, as well as spotted and mottled patterns.
In temperament the Vikhan is hardy, alert and devoted, a watchful and courageous guardian that bonds closely with its flock and family. Names can honour its colour, its mountain home, or its swift, watchful nature. A black dog suits Onyx, Jet, Shadow, and Ebony; a red or fawn dog wears Rusty, Ginger, Copper, Sandy, Fawn, and Tawny; a spotted coat invites Spot, Domino, and Pepper; and its highland work is honoured by Scout, Ranger, Cliff, Timber, Storm, and Echo.
