Miniature Fox Terrier Mini Foxie Dog Names

The Miniature Fox Terrier -- the Mini Foxie, as it is known across its homeland -- is a small, spirited Australian terrier with English roots. Its ancestors were the Fox Terriers that early settlers brought out from England, and from the 1800s breeders in Australia selected the smallest and gamest of them to make a compact, lightning-quick ratter. On farms and homesteads it earned its keep clearing rats, rabbits and snakes, and it was known affectionately as nothing grander than the little foxie. The breed is thought to owe its neat size to crosses with the Toy Manchester Terrier, and later a touch of the English Toy Terrier and the Whippet.

It is a small dog built for work: lean, balanced and athletic, standing only about a foot at the shoulder, with large, sharply pricked ears and the alert, foxy expression that gives the breed its name. The coat is short, fine and smooth, and the standard allows just three colour patterns -- black and white, tan and white, and the classic tricolour of black, tan and white -- always on a predominantly white dog marked with patches of black and tan. The closely related Tenterfield Terrier was bred up from the same little ratters before going its own way.

For all its small size the Mini Foxie is a big personality: bold, lively, sharply intelligent and utterly devoted, equally happy hunting vermin or curled on a lap. Names can play up its tiny frame, its white-and-tan coat, its plucky ratter's heart, or its Aussie roots. A pint-sized pup suits Peanut, Tiny, Pip, Pixie, and Gizmo; its white-and-tricolour coat wears Snow, Ivory, Pearl, Patches, Spot, Domino, Pepper, and Freckles; a tan-marked one suits Rusty, Tan, Ginger, and Hazel; its bold ratter spirit suits Scout, Bandit, Dash, Bolt, Ace, and Rocky; and Bruce, Matilda, and Digger give it an Aussie flavour.
