The Mudhol Hound, registered by some clubs as the Caravan Hound and also called the Mahratta or Pashmi Hound, is a swift Indian sighthound from the Mudhol taluk of Karnataka, in the Deccan. An offshoot of the Saluki, it was carried into the subcontinent long ago by traders and mercenaries travelling in caravans, which is how the Caravan Hound earned its name. In the early twentieth century Shrimant Rajesaheb Malojirao Ghorpade, the ruler of Mudhol, revived the royal strain and presented a pair to King George V in England. In 2005 the breed was honoured on one of India Post's four indigenous-dog stamps.
Built like the desert gazehounds it descends from, the Mudhol is tall, lean and deep-chested, made for speed and endurance across open country. Its short coat comes most often in fawn, fallow, red and cream -- colours that melt into the dry Deccan landscape -- as well as black, brindle and white. In 2017 it made history as the first Indian breed inducted into the Indian Army, with dogs trained at the Remount Veterinary Corps in Meerut for surveillance and border duty.
The Mudhol is loyal, alert and tireless, devoted to its own family yet reserved and aloof with strangers -- an able watchdog as well as a runner. Names can honour its great speed, its warm coat, its soldier's record, or its Indian roots. The swift sighthound suits Dash, Flash, Bolt, Arrow, Comet, and Streak; a fawn or red coat wears Sandy, Honey, Goldie, Rusty, and Tawny; its military service suits Major, Captain, Scout, Ranger, and Chief; and Raja, Veer, Arjun, and Shiva nod to its homeland.
