Lagotto Romagnolo Dog Names

The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient Italian breed from the Romagna, the lowland country and marshes of north-central Italy. For centuries it worked the lagoons of the Po delta as a water retriever; as those wetlands were drained for farmland it was redirected to the work it is now famous for, and today it is the only purebred dog in the world bred specifically to hunt truffles. The American Kennel Club granted it full recognition in 2015 as a member of the Sporting group; in the FCI it is breed 298, of Italy.

It is a sturdy, medium-small dog under a dense, woolly, curly and waterproof coat -- the kind of ancient water-dog coat thought to stand behind several of the curly breeds -- usually kept clipped for working. In temperament it is affectionate, keen, even-tempered and highly trainable, with an extraordinary nose and the focused, methodical drive of a dog bred to search.

Italian names honour the breed's Romagna home most directly -- Dante, Enzo, Luca, Marco, Romeo and Aldo for males, Bella, Sofia, Gia and Olive for females -- all sit naturally on this Italian truffle dog. Earthy, woodland picks such as Digger, Sage, Hazel and Rosemary nod to the forest floor it searches, while River and Splash recall its older life as a marsh-water retriever.
