The Bhotia, also known as the Himalayan Sheepdog or Bhote Kukur, is an ancient livestock-guardian dog of the Indian Himalayas. It takes its name from the Bhotia (Bhutia) hill tribe of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim, with close relatives across the border in Nepal and Bhutan. Developed from Tibetan Mastiff stock, which it strongly resembles, it has worked for generations at high altitude -- guarding flocks of yak and sheep, and the family encampment itself, against wolves, leopards and snow leopards. In 2005 it was honoured on one of India Post's four indigenous-breed postage stamps.
This is a large, powerfully built mountain dog wrapped in a long, thick, harsh double coat made for brutal Himalayan winters. It is seen in solid black, black-and-tan, brown, tan, grey, white and mixes of these, usually with small drooped ears and a heavily plumed tail curled high over the back. Unusually for a livestock guardian, the Bhotia is also used to help herd, not only to watch -- a versatile working partner rather than a one-job dog.
In temperament the Bhotia is brave, intensely loyal, intelligent and protective, bonding closely with its own people while staying watchful of strangers. Names can honour its dark or tan coat, its shaggy bear-like build, its Himalayan home, or its guardian heart. A black or black-and-tan dog suits Onyx, Jet, Shadow, Raven, Ebony, and Midnight; a brown or tan one wears Rusty, Copper, Hazel, Tawny, and Caramel; a great shaggy guardian carries Bear, Teddy, Simba, and Fluffy; and its Himalayan, often Buddhist heritage is honoured by Zen, Karma, Buddha, Lotus, and Shiva.
