The Polish Hound, or Ogar Polski, is a large scenthound from Poland, long used to track and bay big game -- wild boar, deer, and hare -- across forest and field on its deep, resonant voice. The breed nearly disappeared during the Second World War, and its survival rests on a post-war revival: from 1959 Colonel Piotr Kartawik rebuilt a heavier-boned line at his z Kresow kennel from dogs imported out of the east, while Colonel Jozef Pawlusiewicz developed a lighter type. Engineer Jerzy Dylewski formalised the first standard in 1964, and the Federation Cynologique Internationale recognised the Ogar Polski in 1966.
It is a substantial, strongly built hound with a striking black-and-tan saddle, long drooping ears, and a noble, deep-muzzled head. On the trail it is methodical, tireless, and famously vocal, following a scent with single-minded persistence; off duty it is calm, gentle, and good-natured, a friendly and even-tempered companion that bonds closely with its family. Like most scenthounds it is driven by its nose and rewards patient, consistent training.
Names for a Polish Hound can honour its Polish roots, its black-and-tan coat, or its work on the trail. Polish and Slavic picks like Bruno, Marek, and Boris suit a male, with Ania, Ewa, Kasia, and Zofia for a female, and the regal Baron and Duke fitting so noble a hound. The rich black-and-tan coat invites Copper, Rusty, Sable, Onyx, and Shadow, while the breed's hunting heritage and booming voice suit Echo, Ranger, Hunter, Scout, and Hawk -- and, for its powerful build, Diesel, Tank, and Bruiser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there names that suit the black-and-tan coat?
