The Stabyhoun is a rare versatile gundog from Friesland (Fryslan), the lake-and-meadow province of the northern Netherlands, where it has worked as an all-round farm dog since at least the early 1800s. On the smallholdings of the Frisian woodlands it did everything a working dog could be asked to do -- pointing and retrieving game for the hunt, clearing the yard of rats, moles, and polecats, and standing watch over the farm. For generations it was bred alongside its fellow Frisian breed, the Wetterhoun, the two dogs crossed to sharpen their working gifts; that practice ended only when the Stabyhoun won official recognition in its own right in 1942. It remains one of the rarest breeds in the world, treasured by a devoted circle of Dutch families and sportsmen.
A medium-sized dog with a long, sleek coat and a gentle, patient expression, the Stabyhoun wears black-and-white, brown-and-white, or more rarely orange-and-white, sometimes flecked with ticking or roan through the white. In character it is calm, intelligent, and deeply loyal -- soft enough to be a trusted family companion, biddable enough for the field, and steady enough to make a quiet, watchful house dog. It bonds closely to its people, learns willingly, and brings the easy, unflashy competence of a true all-rounder.
Names for a Stabyhoun can salute its Frisian and Dutch roots, its striking patched coat, or its all-purpose working past. Dutch picks such as Jelle, Willem, Bram, Dirk, and Jan suit a male, with Sanne, Saskia, and Tess for a female. The bold black-and-white markings invite Domino, Magpie, Oreo, Inky, Pepper, and Patches, while a brown-and-white dog wears Brownie, Cocoa, and Hazel beautifully. For the farm-bred worker behind the gentle face, Scout, Ranger, and Hunter all fit.
