The Taiwan Dog -- the Formosan Mountain Dog -- is the indigenous dog of Taiwan, a medium hunting dog descended from the semi-wild dogs that lived alongside the island's aboriginal peoples for thousands of years. In the forested mountains it was an essential partner, used to track and hunt Formosan wild boar, sambar deer, serow and muntjac. The FCI gave the breed provisional recognition in 2004 and full recognition in 2015, listing it among the primitive and spitz-type hunting dogs.
This is a lean, athletic, medium dog standing under about fifty centimetres, built for agility on steep ground. It has a triangular head, dark almond-shaped eyes, prick or half-prick ears, and a sickle-shaped tail, all wrapped in a short, hard, close-lying double coat; many dogs carry the distinctive black spotting on the tongue seen in primitive breeds. The coat comes in black -- the most iconic colour -- along with brindle, fawn and white, as well as white marked with black, fawn or brindle.
Alert, agile and intensely loyal, the Taiwan Dog bonds closely with its family while staying watchful and reserved with strangers, a natural guardian as much as a hunting partner. It is highly intelligent and energetic, and thrives with a job to do. Names can honour its black or brindle coat, its island-and-mountain home, or its hunting heritage. The iconic black coat suits Onyx, Jet, Shadow, Raven, Ebony, Midnight, and Panther; a brindle dog wears Tiger, Stripe, Smoky, Sable, and Ash; its island roots invite Jade, Banyan, Jungle, Forest, Cliff, Rocky, Lotus, Kona, and Maui; and the keen hunter is well served by Hunter, Scout, Ranger, Hawk, and Echo.
