The Miniature American Shepherd is, in plain terms, a small Australian Shepherd. It was developed in California in the late 1960s and 1970s by breeding down from small Australian Shepherds, became a favourite of the horse-show and rodeo circuit, and was originally known as the Miniature Australian Shepherd before being renamed for American Kennel Club recognition, which it received in full in 2015 as a member of the Herding group. It is still widely known by its nickname, the Mini Aussie.
It carries the full Australian Shepherd package in a smaller frame -- the same keen intelligence, herding drive and agility aptitude, and the same striking coat range, including the blue-merle and red-merle patterns, often marked with white and copper. In temperament it is energetic, devoted, highly trainable and busy: a working herder that needs a job, exercise and a person to focus on.
Western and ranch names suit the breed's American stock-dog heritage most directly -- Dakota, Sierra, Cody, Reno, Dusty, Ranger, Maverick and Wrangler sit naturally on this Mini Aussie. Coat-pattern picks such as Blue, Merle, Marble, Domino and Patches honour its famous merle markings, while small-but-mighty names like Pip, Roo, Pocket and Tiny suit its compact size and big herding heart.
