The Chinese Chongqing Dog is one of China's oldest and rarest native breeds, with a lineage believed to reach back to the Han dynasty. Ceramic figures of unmistakably Chongqing-type dogs, dated to roughly two thousand years ago, have been found guarding tombs in the Jiangbei area of Chongqing. Developed in the mountains of eastern Sichuan, it served as both a hunter -- of rabbit, wild boar, deer and birds -- and a fearless guardian of livestock and home. Numbers fell sharply as the region urbanised, and dedicated restoration efforts have been underway since the 1970s.
This is a powerful, athletic medium dog with an unmistakable look. It carries a short, coarse coat in reddish-brown or black, a square head with a prominent stop, a blue-black tongue shared with a few other ancient Chinese breeds, and a short tail held stiffly upright -- often likened to a bamboo stick. Males stand around forty to forty-five centimetres and weigh roughly twenty to twenty-five kilograms, with females a little smaller.
In temperament the Chongqing is noble, fearless and devoted, calm with its family yet quick to protect them from any threat. Names can honour its reddish-brown or black coat, its hunting past, or its ancient Chinese roots. The warm coat suits Rusty, Ginger, Copper, Caramel, Hazel, and Tawny; a black dog wears Onyx, Jet, Shadow, Ebony, and Midnight; the keen hunter is well served by Hunter, Scout, Ranger, Echo, and Hawk; and an East-Asian-inspired pick such as Bao, Jade, Lin, Mei, or Tao nods to its homeland.
