The Bohemian Shepherd, or Chodsky pes, is an ancient herding and watch dog from what is now the Czech Republic, traced to the Chodsko region around the 1300s. It takes its Czech name from the Chods, the border people of western Bohemia who used these dogs to patrol the frontier, herd their flocks, and track game. The breed was so bound up with that role that in 1325 King John of Luxembourg confirmed the Chods' special privileges, including the right -- denied to ordinary Bohemian peasants -- to keep large dogs. The breed nearly vanished after the Second World War; an early bid for recognition in 1948 stalled over the standard, and it was not until 1984 that the FCI judge Jan Findejs and the cynologist Vilem Kurz set out to re-establish it. Since 2019 the Bohemian Shepherd has held provisional FCI recognition and a place in the American Kennel Club's Foundation Stock Service.
In looks the breed recalls a smaller, lighter German Shepherd, with a compact, well-proportioned body, small high-set erect ears, an elegant neck, and a long, thick coat in the classic "black with tan" pattern. Its temperament is stable, calm, and friendly -- good with its owner, the wider family, and especially children, quick to learn and biddable, with a keen nose that makes it a capable search-and-rescue dog and an excellent, watchful guardian.
Names for a Bohemian Shepherd can draw on its Czech homeland, its dark coat, or its guarding past. Czech picks like Petra, Eliska, and Anezka carry the heritage of the Chodsko borderland. The black-and-tan coat suits dark-toned names -- Onyx, Shadow, Sable, Jet, Raven, Ash, and Tan all reflect the colouring. And for a breed first bred to patrol a frontier and guard a flock, capable working names like Bear, Scout, Ranger, Rex, and Max fit the watchful, herding character.
