Top Dog Names by Breed

Per-breed name rankings drawn from Sniffspot — a US dog-services platform that publishes name popularity by breed based on millions of real customer bookings. The premise that drives this section: different breeds genuinely favor different names. Beagle owners pick Daisy at #1; Frenchie owners pick Luna; Dachshund owners go with Milo; Goldens are dominated by Charlie. A single global "top 50" hides all of this — a per-breed list is dramatically more useful if you have a specific breed in mind.

How These Lists Were Built

Each breed page below shows up to 50 most-booked names for dogs of that breed on Sniffspot, with our database joining in meaning, origin, and gender where the name matches. Sniffspot publishes coverage for 137 breeds — the popular and well-documented ones; rare breeds, designer mixes, and very new breeds aren't tracked.

When a name in the list doesn't exist in our database (rare, but happens with regional or invented names), it shows as plain text with no link. The ranking itself isn't filtered — Sniffspot's full top 50 stays intact. Sniffspot's pages also support "load more" for hundreds of further-rank names; we capture the top 50 — the popularity-meaningful tier.

What the Cross-Breed Data Shows

  • Bear is the working-breed signal. Bear appears in the top 5 of 20 different breeds on Sniffspot — almost all large, outdoorsy, working, or heritage breeds (Bernese, Newfoundland, Mastiff, etc.). It's almost a tell about the kind of dog someone has.
  • Daisy is the smaller-friendly-breed signal. Daisy is in the top 5 of 18 breeds, but the breed mix is the opposite — Beagles, Cavaliers, Cocker Spaniels, smaller hounds. The vibe a name gives is real.
  • Luna is everywhere. Luna appears as the #1 name across 26 different breeds — the single most-shared #1 in our entire dataset.
  • Breed-distinctive picks exist. Frenchies favor Winston (a breed-specific cultural fit); German Shepherds (when present in other sources) skew toward German names; Huskies cluster around Nordic and arctic-themed picks. The Sniffspot leaf pages surface these.
