Dog Name Pronunciation Helper
Type any name and hear it spoken aloud. Useful for testing foreign-origin names before committing — and for sharing how to say it with vet techs, dog walkers, and family.
Why test pronunciation before naming a dog?
- Vet records, microchip, insurance. Your dog’s name will be read aloud at every vet visit. If it’s consistently mispronounced, prepare to spell it.
- Recall at the dog park. A name you can’t shout clearly is a recall problem. Test at full volume in your kitchen.
- Foreign-origin names. Saoirse (SEER-sha), Caoimhe (KEE-va), Niamh (NEEV), Aoife (EE-fa), Eoghan (OH-an) all look impossible to English speakers but are beautiful when said correctly.
- Family pronunciation alignment. If half the household says it differently, the dog gets confused. Test with everyone before committing.
Common pronunciation traps
- Silent letters — Naoise (NEE-sha), Mhairi (VAH-ree)
- Foreign vowel clusters — Maoilios (MWEE-loss), Ríoghnach (REE-nach)
- Consonant blends — Tlaloc (TLAH-lok), Quetzal (KET-sahl)
- Words spelled like English but pronounced differently — Niamh isn’t "Nee-am-h", it’s NEEV
Frequently asked questions
How does the audio work?
Your browser has a built-in text-to-speech engine (Apple, Google, Microsoft). We pass the name to that engine — no audio is sent over the internet. Available voices and accents depend on your device.
Why doesn't the audio sound exactly right?
TTS engines guess pronunciation from spelling. For unusual names (Saoirse = "SEER-sha", Caoimhe = "KEE-va"), the engine often gets it wrong. The IPA notation we show is a closer reference — and our database stores official pronunciations for many names.
Can I use this for cat or baby names?
Yes — it works for any English-spelled name. The dog-name database lookup will only match canine names, but the audio playback works for anything.
My phone doesn't play audio — what's wrong?
Some mobile browsers require a user tap before allowing audio playback. Try tapping the play button directly. iPhone Safari sometimes silences TTS unless your ringer is on.
