Dog Size Visualizer
Pick up to 3 breeds — see them at scale next to a 5′4″ / 135 lb person (US adult female average height, healthy weight). Dog heights are based on AKC breed standards (mid-range, male).

About the silhouettes
The silhouettes are simplified geometric proxies, not breed-accurate body shapes — they\'re scaled to the AKC standard withers (shoulder) height for each breed and use approximate body length and proportions. Coat color is the typical or breed-standard color but obviously varies within each breed.

Why size matters when picking a breed
- Living space. Apartments work for most breeds if the dog gets exercise, but giant breeds need more square footage just to lie down comfortably.
- Vehicle / travel. A Greyhound fits an SUV cargo area; a Newfoundland needs serious vehicle planning.
- Cost scaling. Food, vet care, medication doses, boarding fees all scale with size — see our adoption cost calculator.
- Lifespan. Smaller breeds typically live 13-17 years; giant breeds often 7-10. Use our age calculator to see how size affects aging speed.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate are the silhouettes?
Heights are based on AKC breed standards (mid-range of male shoulder height). Real dogs vary — females are typically 1-2 inches shorter, and individual variation within a breed can be ±2 inches. The silhouettes are simplified geometric proxies, not breed-accurate body shapes.
Why is shoulder height the standard measurement?
Shoulder height (officially "withers height") is consistent across postures and easy to measure. Total length, head height, and body length all vary with how the dog is standing — withers stays put. Breed standards always specify withers height.
My breed isn't on the list — can you add it?
The list covers every breed with a published profile on iDogNames (200+ breeds). If yours is missing, drop us a note and we'll add it.
Will my puppy actually reach this size?
For purebred puppies from established breeders, yes — usually within ±10%. For mixed breeds, it's more variable. Use our puppy weight calculator for a current-weight-based projection.
