Most Popular Boy Dog Names of 2025: AKC's Full Top 100, Ranked
The American Kennel Club's 2025 boy dog name rankings show two stories: Max retook #1 after a one-year displacement by Milo, and Hank exploded from outside the top 10 directly to #2 — the most aggressive new entry in this four-year dataset. The boy list as a whole is in the middle of a country/Western cultural shift; five of the names in the 2022 top 10 (Buddy, Tucker, Leo, Toby, Ollie) are no longer there, replaced by Hank, Gus, Duke, Maverick, and Finn.
This page lists the full 1–100 ranked boy names read column-major from AKC's table, with each name's origin, meaning, and breed-fit notes. After the table is the analysis: tier-by-tier patterns, year-over-year movement, and 2026 predictions. For the combined view (boys + girls + cross-trend analysis), see Most Popular Dog Names of 2025: Top 100 Boys and Girls Combined. For the parallel girl list, see Most Popular Girl Dog Names of 2025.
The numbers below read AKC's 5×20 table column-major (column 1 = ranks 1–20, column 2 = 21–40, etc), which is how AKC actually intends them. Most "AKC top 100" articles online read the table row-by-row and get the order wrong; for the full methodology and why competitors are scrambling the rankings, see the combined hub article.

Tier analysis — what each part of the list is doing
Top 10 (Max → Finn) — the country-Western shift in action
The 2025 top 10 looks dramatically different from the 2022 top 10. Max held #1 (3 of last 4 years). Hank, Gus, Duke, Maverick are new top-10 entries in 2025; none were in the 2022 or 2023 top 10. The names being displaced — Buddy (#28 in 2025), Tucker (#20), Leo (#25), Toby (#32), Ollie (#26) — are the friendly-classic register: short, gentle, lap-dog-coded, mid-century-American. The replacement set skews short, hard-consonant, and rugged.
The most plausible cultural cause is Yellowstone, the Taylor Sheridan modern-Western drama, plus its prequel 1923, plus the broader 2023–2024 country-pivot moment that included Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter, Post Malone's country shift, and the surge of Maverick as a baby name after Top Gun: Maverick (2022). The 2025 boy top 100 also contains Rip (#49, the Yellowstone ranch hand), Waylon (#70, country-music register), Ranger (#40), Chief (#65), Whiskey (#62), Cash (#16) — a coherent country-Western naming cluster that did not exist as a top-100 register in 2022. Goose (#19) and Maverick (#8) come from a parallel cultural source: Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which lifted both names on its own track distinct from the Yellowstone register but converging on the same outcome — short, hard, masculine names.
11–30 (Rocky → Jax) — established mid-tier
This tier is where established 2010s-era names live: Charlie, Leo, Jack, Tucker, Beau. Plus the rising-star tier of newer-feeling names: Moose, Cash, Goose, Loki, Zeus — all hitting in the #13–#22 range. The pattern: short syllables, hard onsets, working-or-mythic register. Notably stable: Cooper at #4 (was #3 in 2022) and Finn at #10 (was #9 in 2023).
Milo's #12 placement is the most-talked-about anomaly: this same name was #1 in 2024, the only time Max has been displaced from #1 in this multi-year window. The collapse from #1 to #12 in twelve months is the largest single-year drop in the dataset.
31–60 (Blue → Shadow) — the genre-coded middle
This tier reveals the full breadth of 2025 boy naming. Color names (Blue, Copper), sporting / outdoor names (Gunner, Boone, Ranger, Buck, Scout), and the broader Norse / mythic register (Thor, Odin, Atlas, Apollo) all live here. The country-Western entrants — Rip at #49, Ruger at #54, Bandit at #58 — sit at this level too.
61–100 (Ozzy → Red) — the long tail
The 60+ tier is where strongly genre-coded names cluster: Whiskey, Waylon, Chief, Doc (all country-Western), Simba, Loki, Draco (pop-culture / fantasy), Onyx and Red (color-as-name). Plus the long-tail classic-male names that have fallen but are still present: Jack-adjacent, German Shepherd-coded names like Rex and King. The 80–100 range is the most volatile across years — these slots churn most.
Year-over-year movement — what changed from 2024
The five biggest 2024 → 2025 boy-name moves:
- Hank: outside top 10 → #2. The single most aggressive 2025 entry. Country-Western register, Yellowstone-era cultural surge.
- Milo: #1 → #12. The reverse: Milo briefly took #1 from Max in 2024, then collapsed harder than any other top-10 name in this dataset.
- Max: #2 → #1. Retook the top slot. Net record across 2022–2025: 3 years at #1.
- Charlie: #4 → #9. Slipped out of top 5 for the first time in this window. Still top 10 but losing ground.
- Tucker: #9 → #20. The friendly-classic register continues bleeding out of the top 10.
Names new to the 2025 top 25 that were not in the 2024 top 25: Hank (#2), Gus (#5), Maverick (#8), Goose (#19), Cash (#16), Murphy (#17), Loki (#23), Beau (#24), Tucker (#20 — re-entered after dropping out of top 10), Louie (#21).
Names that fell out of the 2025 top 25 vs. 2024: Toby, Ollie, Rocky (held but dropped to #11), Bear (held but dropped to #6), Buddy (now #28).
2026 predictions
Extrapolations from 2022–2025 AKC data with no external corroboration; AKC does not publish forward-looking forecasts. Read these as informed pattern-matching, not as guarantees — predictions in pet-naming are most reliable at the register / cluster level (which type of name is rising), less reliable at the specific-name level.
Five educated guesses for the 2026 boy list, based on 2022–2025 trajectories:
1. Hank gives up #2 but stays top 10. Names that vault to #2 in one year almost always settle one to four spots lower the next year — Milo's 2024 → 2025 trajectory is the cautionary example. Hank will likely land in the #4–#7 range.
2. Max holds #1 again. Across 2022–2025 Max has been #1 three of four years, displaced only once briefly by Milo. No 2026 challenger is currently visible in the data.
3. Country-Western register continues expanding. Country-Western names like Wrangler, Boots, Stetson, Cody, Tate are candidates for new top-100 entry — these are illustrative of the cluster, not specific forecasts. Existing entrants (Hank, Waylon, Rip, Ranger, Chief) are more likely to stay than not.
4. Norse / mythic register continues growing. Thor (#41 in 2025), Odin (#57), Loki (#23), Zeus (#22) are all holding or rising. Norse-mythology names like Magnus, Bjorn, Tyr are illustrative candidates for new top-100 entry; the prediction is the cluster expanding, not these exact names. Marvel + Norse-mythology resurgence continues feeding this register.
5. The friendly-classic register's rebound is unlikely until at least 2027. Buddy, Tucker, Leo, Toby, Ollie are unlikely to return to the top 10 in 2026. The cultural momentum is still moving away from them.
