Medium Dog Breeds — Size Compared to a Person

Medium breeds — 16 to 22 inches at the shoulder — are the most common size class in companion-dog ownership. They typically weigh 25–60 pounds, live 11–14 years, and cover most of the working, herding, and sporting breeds people associate with the word "dog."

Medium breeds are what most owners actually want when they describe a "regular-size dog." Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Whippets, Brittanies, English Springer Spaniels, Boxers, Standard Poodles, Shiba Inus, Siberian Huskies — all medium. The class is built for sustained activity rather than pure size or speed: most medium breeds were developed for work that required hours of running, herding, retrieving, or hunting.

Medium dogs are the optimal apartment-to-yard ratio: large enough to look like a "real dog," small enough to fit in a city flat with daily long walks. They handle most family situations including small children. Their food cost is half a Lab's and a quarter of a Mastiff's.

The medium class has the broadest temperament spread of any. A medium Australian Shepherd needs 90 minutes of structured exercise daily; a medium Basset Hound needs 30. Pick the breed for the temperament match first; the size class itself does not determine the energy level.
