Large Dog Breeds — Size Compared to a Person

Large breeds — 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder — are the working-and-sporting heavyweights of the dog world. They typically weigh 60–100 pounds, live 10–12 years, and include most of the herding-livestock and gun-dog flagships.

The large size class contains the breeds that built the modern working-dog reputation: Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Boxers at the top end, Standard Poodles at the lower end, Weimaraners, German Shorthaired Pointers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and the larger spaniels.

Large breeds need more of everything — food, space, exercise, vet care — but they are also the size class most associated with the classic family-dog and protector roles. Many large breeds are gentle giants in the home (Berner, Newfoundland-adjacent breeds at this height) and intense work partners outside.

Lifespan is the structural cost. Most large breeds live 10–12 years, and some lines are shorter. Joint health (hips, elbows) is the major lifelong concern. Large breeds also need significantly more controlled growth in puppyhood — overfeeding a large-breed puppy can lock in skeletal problems for life.
