A female mixed-breed dog, became the first animal to enter orbit when she was launched into space aboard Sputnik 2.

Laika was a Soviet space dog who became the first living creature to orbit Earth, launched aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957. Originally a stray found on the streets of Moscow, she was selected for the mission because the Soviet program believed strays were already accustomed to extreme cold and hunger. Her real name appears to have been Kudryavka ("Little Curly") — the name Laika ("Barker," from the Russian for the Husky-like breed type) was the public-facing identity adopted by the Soviet press.

The mission was hastily prepared to mark the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution; Sputnik 2 had no return capability. Laika died within hours of launch from heat exposure when the thermal control system failed — a fact concealed by Soviet authorities for decades. Her death was officially blamed on planned euthanasia after several days in orbit, until 2002 when Russian engineer Dimitri Malashenkov confirmed the early thermal failure at a NASA conference.

Laika is commemorated by a small monument near the Russian military research facility in Moscow where she was trained, unveiled in 2008. Her image appears on stamps in dozens of countries, in songs (Laika by Mecano, Laika by Spaceships Are Cool), in graphic novels, and as a recurring cultural symbol of the brutal pragmatism of the early space race. As a dog name, Laika ranks in the top 100 in Russia and is increasingly common worldwide for Husky-type and primitive Northern breeds.

Naming takeaway

Laika carries gravity that few dog names achieve — naming a dog Laika is taking a position about the cost of human progress. Phonetically excellent for daily calling: two syllables, hard L onset, sustained vowel, projects beautifully. Best fits Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed, Akita, and other Northern primitive breeds (which the Soviet space program preferred for their cold tolerance and small size). Increasingly used for rescue dogs as a symbolic naming choice.
