Famous Dogs of the Early Modern Era
Early Modern dogs (1500-1800) — pre-industrial Europe and the colonial Americas. Documentation is sparse; most named dogs from this era survive only in noble family ledgers, naval ship rosters, and explorer journals. The era predates standardized breed development; dogs were classified by function (gun dog, water dog, lapdog) rather than by formal breed.
Early modern dog-naming style
Naming conventions overlap heavily with Pre-Victorian — short, formal, often noble-aristocratic register. Names borrowed from naval rank (Boatswain, Captain), classical mythology (Caesar, Diana), or simple descriptors.
