Actor & Performer

Actor dogs earned their name through camera work — feature films, TV series, advertising campaigns, silent-era cinema. The category contains some of the most-recognized fictional canine names in 20th-century media: Pal (the original Lassie), Rin Tin Tin (silent-film German Shepherd, single-handedly credited with saving Warner Bros. from bankruptcy), Buddy (Air Bud), Higgins (the original Benji). These dogs typically had registered breed names, professional handlers, sometimes Hollywood agents, and their offspring continued the role across decades. The Pal-descended Lassie line ran nine generations.

On-screen vs off-screen names: the actor-dog convention

Actor-dog naming has two registers. The on-screen character name is often gendered and warm (Lassie, Benji, Buddy). The off-screen working name used by the trainer is often short and gruff (Pal, Higgins, Spike, Daisy). Modern owners borrowing from this pool sometimes mix the two — a Rough Collie named Pal references the actor; a Rough Collie named Lassie references the character. Both are valid; the distinction matters mostly to film historians.
