Top Dog Names — Every "Most Popular" List in One Place
If you're naming a dog and want to know what other people are actually picking, this is the page. The "top dog names" you'll find scattered across the internet usually fall into one of two camps: a single global "top 100" list (which is the same generic Luna-Bella-Charlie wherever you look) or a marketing-driven puff piece without sources. Neither is much use if you're looking at a specific Beagle puppy in Texas, or trying to honor a French heritage, or wondering what was popular the year your dog was born.
So we built this hub from authoritative real-world data — Sniffspot bookings, American Kennel Club registrations, Agria UK insurance policies, and editor-curated cultural curation — and broke it into the angles that actually matter when you're naming a dog: by breed (because Beagles get different names than Frenchies), by US state (because Alabama and California don't pick alike), by year (so you can see what was hot when), and by country (for cultural-fit picks beyond the Anglo-American mainstream).
How These Rankings Are Built
Different sources cover different angles. Here's what's behind each section so you know what kind of "popularity" you're looking at:
- By breed — up to top 50 names per breed from Sniffspot bookings, covering 142 breeds with real data. Breeds without Sniffspot coverage (mixes, rare breeds) are not listed here.
- By US state and DC — Sniffspot's local rankings for all 50 states and Washington, DC, each with a hand-written cultural-style intro merged in.
- By year — American Kennel Club's annual top 10 boy + girl, captured from akc.org via the Wayback Machine for 2022–2025.
- By country — editor-curated cultural-fit picks across 31 countries (drawn from name origin tags, not popularity), since reliable per-country popularity data isn't published outside the US/UK.
Every name links through to its full profile — meaning, origin, gender, pronunciation. Measured rankings and editorial collections remain visibly labeled as different evidence types.
Which List to Pick?
- Have a specific breed in mind? Skip everything else and go to that breed's page — Beagle owners and Doberman owners genuinely pick different names, and a per-breed top 50 is more useful than any global list.
- Live somewhere with a strong regional naming culture (Deep South, Pacific Northwest, New York)? The state list shows what your neighbors actually pick, plus a hand-written intro on the regional style.
- Want a name that holds up over time? Compare the AKC year pages — names that appear in multiple years (Luna and Max have both held #1 multiple years) are safer bets than one-year wonders.
- Naming with cultural heritage in mind (Spanish, Japanese, Irish, German)? The country pages curate names by origin tag rather than statistical popularity, which is what most people in this situation actually want.
What 8,700+ Real-World Rankings Tell Us
Combining data from nine sources across breeds, states, countries, and years, a few patterns emerge that you don't see in any single top-10 list:
- Luna is the most dominant dog name on Earth right now. She's the #1 girl name in roughly half of US states (25 out of 51), the #1 name across 26 different breeds, and held the AKC's #1 spot every year from 2022 through 2025 — four consecutive years. No other name comes close to that level of consistency.
- Boy #1 churns more than girl #1. AKC's male top spot rotated Max → Max → Milo → Max in 2022–2025; female #1 was Luna every single year. If you're picking a "safe classic" boy name, that volatility is real signal.
- Female-leaning names slightly outweigh male in real bookings. Across US state top 10s, female-coded names appear 223 times, male-coded 174 — about 1.3× more often. Unisex names (Charlie, Bailey, Riley) make up another large chunk and are rising.
- Breed culture is real. Bear shows up as #1 in 7 different breeds — almost all large, outdoorsy, or working breeds. Daisy and Archie cluster in smaller, friendlier breeds. The mass-market "top 100" hides this entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these real rankings or made up?
The breed, state and year rankings come from named third-party sources such as Sniffspot and the American Kennel Club. Country and broad gender collections are editorial browsing aids, not measured popularity rankings, and are labeled separately.
Is there one universal Top 100 Dog Names ranking?
No single source in this hub measures every dog population worldwide with one comparable method. Breed, state and year lists answer narrower questions with named sources; use the editorial browse collections when you do not need a statistical ranking.
How often is the data updated?
Sniffspot publishes per-breed and per-state rankings on a rolling basis — our snapshot is from May 2026. AKC's annual top-10 by gender is published each Q1 for the prior year. Country lists are editor-curated and updated when our underlying name database changes substantially.
What if my dog's name isn't on any list?
Probably means you picked something distinctive — that's a good sign, not a bad one. These lists capture what's average and trendy; they don't dictate what's "right." Use them to contextualize your pick, not to override it.
A Quick Browse — 12 of iDogNames' Editorial Picks
Hand-rated by our editorial team, not from external popularity data. For real-world rankings, use the by-breed, by-state, or by-year sections below.
Top Dog Names by Year
The American Kennel Club publishes its top 10 boy and girl names every year based on registrations from across the country. We've archived the last four years from akc.org via the Wayback Machine, so you can see how trends shift — Luna held #1 girl every year since 2022, while the boy spot rotated Max → Max → Milo → Max. The current year falls back to our editorial top until AKC publishes the new annual figures.
Top Dog Names of 2026
Editor-curated top 100 for 2026 with separate boy and girl breakouts — placeholder until the AKC publishes its 2026 annual figures (typically Q1 of the following year).
AKC Historical Top 10 (by Year)
Top 10 boy and girl picks from each year's American Kennel Club rankings, captured from akc.org.
Top Dog Names by Breed
Per-breed name rankings from Sniffspot's real booking data — covers 142 breeds. The single most useful angle if you have a specific breed in mind: Beagle owners pick Daisy at #1, Frenchie owners pick Luna, Goldens favor Charlie. The 20 cards below are the most-popular AKC breeds; the full list links through to all 142.
Top Dog Names by US State and Washington, DC
Sniffspot's local rankings across all 50 states and Washington, DC. Useful for spotting regional patterns: Luna sits at #1 in 25 of the 51 jurisdictions, but the names at #2–10 diverge sharply — Alabama leans hunting-coded (Buddy, Zeus, Beau), Massachusetts skews Anglo-trendy (Bella, Lucy, Koda), California favors short and trendy (Milo, Lola). Each ranking page also includes a hand-written intro on the local naming style.
Top Dog Names by Country
Cultural-fit picks for 31 countries — Spanish, Japanese, Irish, German, and 27 more. These are editorial curation by name origin, not popularity data: a Spanish family looking for a "Spanish dog name" usually wants Lola or Chico (names that read Spanish), not the country's actual statistical #1 (which is Luna almost everywhere). Each country page has a hand-written intro on the local naming style and a curated list pulled from matching origin tags in our database.
