The Dutch Shepherd, or Hollandse Herder, is the all-round farm dog of the Netherlands -- a herding breed that arose as a naturally occurring shepherd's dog in the rural Dutch countryside, where it kept hens out of the kitchen garden, drove the cows in for milking, pulled the milk carts, and warned the farmer when a stranger entered the yard. The first breed standard was written in 1898 and allowed any coat colour; in 1914 the standard was changed to permit only brindle, a deliberate choice that set the breed apart from the closely related German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherds. Today the Federation Cynologique Internationale places it in Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs) alongside the Belgian Shepherd varieties, and the American Kennel Club moved it into the Miscellaneous Class effective 1 January 2017, with the American Dutch Shepherd Association as its parent club.
The brindle coat is the breed's signature, coming in gold brindle and silver brindle, and appears in three varieties -- short-haired, long-haired, and rough- or wire-haired. In temperament the Dutch Shepherd is loyal, alert, watchful, active, and notably independent and intelligent, gifted with a true shepherding instinct that lets it work alongside its handler or solve a task on its own; it is neither aggressive nor shy. That intelligence and drive have made the breed a favourite for police, military, search-and-rescue, and dog sport, and it shares much of its working heritage with the Belgian Malinois.
Names for a Dutch Shepherd reach naturally toward its homeland. Dutch picks like Saskia, Dirk, Bram, Sven, Willem, Lotte, and Maud carry the heritage, with Vincent for the painter Van Gogh and Tulip for the country's famous bloom. The brindle coat invites Tiger, Stripe, Tawny, and Sable for the tiger-striped pattern. And because so many Dutch Shepherds work, strong, capable names suit the breed's drive -- Rex, Bolt, Blitz, Diesel, Tank, Ranger, Scout, Hunter, Rocco, Nero, and Storm all fit a working dog of this calibre.
